New Council to meet in regular December Work Session within 24 hours of being sworn in.

New members of the Crossville City Council will quickly start their official duties, about 24 hours after being sworn in with a work session set for December 4 to get ready for the December regular meeting.

Crossville City Hall

In addition, for the third time, the council will plan to meet in an executive session with City Attorney Will Ridley that is set for 6 PM Tuesday evening.  The two previous executive sessions were canceled.

Items up for discussion on the work session agenda include a request for funding from the Roane State Foundation to help fund new science labs and classrooms at the Crossville Center. The foundation is requesting $500,000 from the city and the same amount from the County.

The Inn of the Cumberlands building that has been condemned for some time may finally be coming down. There were some issues with the ownership and liens that have been straightened out and now the city has opened bids for the demolition of the building. The low bidder is Adkins Demolition with a bid of $88,888.88. The bids were reviewed by the city codes department supervisor and the low bid is recommended. The city hopes to sell the property and recoup some or all of the costs expended.

Council will elect a mayor pro-tem to chair meetings if the mayor is unavailable and decide on the status of the position of City Judge Ivy Gardener. These decisions are in the city charter and usually dealt with at the first council meeting following an election every two years. In addition, since the first Tuesday of January falls on New Year's Day, the council will consider rescheduling the January work session.

A resolution putting a social media policy in place is also under consideration. The policy has been recommended by the city's consultant MTAS and the attorney and staff agree the policy is needed. The policy addresses the city's social media presence as well as how city employees post. An employee may not characterize themselves as representing the city unless approved by their supervisor.

Council will once again look at pickleball courts and make final appropriations for the cost in a budget amendment.

The regular Council meeting for action on these discussions will be Tuesday, December 11.
