Public Encouraged to line procession route Thursday to honor K-9 Cain killed in the line of duty.

With a procession planned to memorialize the Crossville Police dog K-9 Cain who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday August 2nd planned for Thursday August 10, the public is encouraged to line the route from Central Baptist Church north on Highway 127/Main Street to Crossroads Drive to pay their respects. The memorial service will be held at the Duer Soccer complex but there is limited parking at that location and with the large number of law enforcement representatives and media expected it will be difficult to accommodate everyone at that location.

Those wishing to line the procession route are encouraged to wear blue and bring US or Tennessee flags. The procession is scheduled to leave Central Baptist Church at around 11:30 AM and head north on Highway 127 through downtown Crossville then out the four lane before turning off on Crossroads Drive to the soccer complex.

Crossville Community Fourth of July Celebration-Kids, flags, and music!

 A member of events were held in the Downtown Crossville area for the Fourth of July including the DAR sponsored kids parade, The annual Pro-Troops Rally and a community chorus concert.  The rain fell early and at mid day, but for much of the mid morning the weather was partly cloudy and the sun shone through occasionally.

Memorial Day, a day to remember those who have given their last full measure...

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

Cumberland Homestead Tower Association dedicates flag pole

What started as a request for something to use as a flag pole at the historic Homesteads Tower turned into a community effort that secured a new flag pole and local organisations that cooperated to help get the pole installed.

Group gathered for the flag pole dedication.

The new flag pole was dedicated Friday October 28 and a group of Cumberland Homestead Tower Association (CHTA) board members, supporters and community members turned out to dedicate the pole and two new flags.

The ceremony opened with an accepella rendition of the National Anthem by Rob Baker and an invocation by CHTA board member Charles Tollett.

Board member Levonn Hubbard recognized several local businesses and community organizations that helped make the project possible.  Hubbard said that city engineer Tim Begley had helped in his spare time to oversee the installation and Volunteer Energy Coop had brought equipment needed to dig the hole for the installation of the pole.

The pole was supplied by the Woodmen of the World and with the assistance of Flynn's Signs bucket truck the pole was installed.  An American and Tennessee flag was presented to the CHTA by State Representative Cameron Sexton.  

With the help of Hubbard and Baker, Tim Begley raised the two flags on the new pole and the Pledge of Allegiance as well as the salute tot he Tennessee flag were recited by those gathered.

A respectful crowd took part in a special Memorial Day program held in the Crossville Outlet Mall on Saturday afternoon.  The featured speaker was Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox.  Cox spoke about heroes and heroism, the sacrifice made by soldiers who lost their lives in battle and addressed the young people in the crowd by telling the story of local Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Alvin C. York.

Also participating in the program was Patrick Taylor, a Vietnam War veteran and former Navy Medic.  Taylor spoke on the history and significance of Memorial Day and led the Pledge of Allegiance. 

The Crossville Chapter 1050 of the Vietnam Veterans Color Guard presented the colors with an honor guard of local Boy and Girl Scouts.  

A time for questions included an explanation of why the flag is folded the way that it is with the triangle representing the three cornered hat of the Revolutionary War soldiers.
