With 6 weeks until the deadline, nominating petitions for the May First Cumberland County Primary elections are coming in. The first day for the State Primary petitions is January 5.
So far two candidates have qualified for the Republican party primary for the Cumberland County Mayor's race, Timothy Claflin and Allen Foster. Additional potential Republican candidates have taken out petitions but they have either not been returned or certified. Other candidates who have taken papers include J. C. Hancock, Doug Scarlett and Ligue Wisdom. Incumbent Ken Carey is not running after serving two terms.

Nick Neal has qualified for the Republican primary race for Circuit Court Clerk and Jessica Burgess has also taken out qualification papers. Both candidates have been campaigning for the office. Incumbent Larry Sherrill previously announced he was not seeking reelection.
Jule Bryson is the only candidate who has been certified for the Republican Primary for County Clerk, Casey Cox is certified in the Republican Primary for Sheriff and Kim Tollett Wyatt has qualified for the Trustee office race.
Two candidates are seeking the Republican nomination for County Road Superintendent. Incumbent Scott Blaylock is seeking reelection and again will face challenger Kevin D. Music who is currently the City of Crossville's road supervisor. Both men have qualified for the ballot.
No Democratic candidate has taken out papers in any of the above races so far.
Incumbent Cumberland County Register of Deeds Judy Graham Swallows has qualified for the Democratic primary with no challenger yet to take out papers to run against her.
