An upper trough coming through Middle Tennessee Saturday night will combine with sub-freezing temperatures to produce snowfall across the region, with most of the accumulating snow occurring after midnight. While most locations will receive only light accumulations, a few spots across the Cumberland Plateau and southern Middle Tennessee will likely see up to an inch of snow.

NOAA Special Weather Statement: Weather forecast calls for snow. Question is how much?

Snow Accumulations are Possible Saturday Night...

A late season snowfall is possible across Middle Tennessee
as cold air is expected to filter into the state and change rain
Saturday afternoon into snow Saturday night.

Some uncertainty still exists to exactly how much snowfall will
occur, but it looks like the best chance for accumulation will be
on the Cumberland Plateau, where up to 2 inches will be possible.
Areas along and north of I-40 will also have a shot of up to an
inch. For those south of I-40, a dusting will be possible.

Thanks to our recent warm weather, ground temperatures will be
pretty warm this weekend. However, as temperatures drop into the
middle and upper 20s Saturday night, some slick spots could
develop on area roadways, especially over the north.
Please stay informed of the weather forecast this weekend and be
ready to adjust your travel plans as needed, especially for
Saturday night.

Snow is also forecast next week for Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Snow possible in the forecast for this weekend.

A forecast for snow accumulations this weekend shouldn't be as bad as the "Storm of the Century" 24 years ago back in 1993 when Crossville got over 25 inches of accumulation.

Friday through Wednesday: A storm system will pass through Middle Tennessee this weekend with a good chance for snow late Saturday and Saturday night. Areas along and north of Interstate 40 may see around an inch of snow, with up to 2 inches along the Cumberland Plateau, and a dusting of snow south of Interstate 40.

Crossville's forecast for Saturday evening currently calls for Snow and sleet likely before 9pm, then snow with a Low around 25. North northeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Snow could cause travel problems Sunday night and Monday morning according NOAA.

NOAA has issued a special weather statement about possible snow accumulation late this weekend.

File Photo

Patchy flurries or very light snow will develop across Middle Tennessee late tonight. A couple of slick spots could develop by daybreak Sunday, but should improve quickly Sunday morning as temperatures rise above freezing.
Through the day Sunday, there will be scattered rain and snow showers. No major travel problems are expected with temperatures above freezing. By Sunday evening, temperatures will fall, and precipitation will change to all snow. Most of the mid-state will have snowfall amounts ranging from just flurries to a dusting. However, locations northeast of Interstate 24 will have greater accumulation potential, with around 1 inch expected for the Upper Cumberland Region.

Higher elevations of the Plateau could have 1 to 2 inches of snowfall Sunday evening. A Winter Weather Advisory may become necessary for these areas as travel problems could develop across Middle Tennessee, especially Sunday night. Temperatures will be in the 20s Sunday night, so any travel problems could impact Monday morning work and school travel.

A hazordous weather statment has also been released;

THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

THERE IS A CHANCE FOR LIGHT SNOW LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY, ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU. ONLY A DUSTING IS EXPECTED...ALTHOUGH A FEW SLICK SPOTS COULD DEVELOP BY DAYBREAK SUNDAY.

CONDITIONS SHOULD IMPROVE QUICKLY AFTER SUNRISE AS TEMPERATURES PUSH ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK.

ANOTHER PERIOD OF SNOW IS EXPECTED LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. MOST OF THE MID-STATE WILL HAVE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS RANGING FROM JUST FLURRIES TO A DUSTING. HOWEVER...LOCATIONS NORTHEAST OF INTERSTATE 24 WILL HAVE GREATER ACCUMULATION POTENTIAL...WITH AROUND 1 INCH EXPECTED FOR THE UPPER CUMBERLAND REGION.
