Election Day May First--Polls open until 7 PM in Cumberland County

The election day for the County Primaries has arrived and voting will take place at individual precincts between 7 AM and 7 PM.

Votes should bring their voter card and a photo ID issued by the state to be able to vote.

Voters must choose to vote in either the Republican or Democratic Primary ballot and while some of the races have only a single incumbent candidate and are already decided, other races will basically be decided by the primary votes cast.  Voters in the Republican primary will decide the races for County Circuit Court Clerk between Jessica Burgess and Nick Neal as well as the County Road Superintendent between incumbent Scott Blaylock and challengers Stanley Hall and Kevin Music.

The only major party candidate for County Mayor will also be decided on the primary ballot and the winner will face an independent candidate in the August election.  The 7 candidates on the Republican ballot include Tim Claflin, Allen Foster, J.C. Hancock, Randall Kidwell, Doug Scarlett, Ligue Wisdom, and Danny Wyatt.

Early Primary Voting Ends Today, April 26, at 5 PM, turn out light so far.

WIth Early voting wrapping up at the close of business today, April 26, 2018, the last chance to vote in the county primary races after today will be election day, May 1, 2018.

The election commission office says some 4000 votes have taken advantage of the early voting as of midday.  That turnout was described as "light."  Most of those ballots were cast were Republican primary voters with only a few hundred voting in the Democratic primary.

One Week Left for Early Voting in the May FIrst Local Primaries

Early voting continues through Thursday, April 26 for the upcoming May First Republican and Democratic Primaries at the County Election Commission office in the Milo Lemmert building, the old Post Office on Main Street. 

Votes must choose either the Republican or the Democratic primary to vote in.  Most of the candidates appear on the Republican ballot including 7 candidates for County Mayor, 3 for Road Superintendent and 2 for Circuit Court Clerk. Sample ballots are below.

Most races will be decided by the primary voting and several have already been decided since only one candidate qualified.  Those with no competition include incumbent Sheriff Casey Cox, County Clerk Jule Bryson, and County Trustee Kim Tollet Wyatt.

Races decided by the primary include Circuit Court Clerk race and the Road Superintendent Race.

The winner of the Republican primary for County Mayor will face independent candidate Sandra Davis in the August County General Election.

The Democrat ballot only includes one race for the Registrar of Deeds with only incumbent Judy Graham Swallows on the ballot and she will retain her office with no other candidate qualifying. 

Voters are required to have a government-issued photo ID to be able to vote.

Chamber of Commerce to hold Pre-Primary County Mayor Candidate Forum in March

The Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce plans to sponsor a Pre-Primary County Mayoral Candidate Forum at the Cumberland County Playhouse-Mainstage on Thursday, March 15th from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. The Forum is being provided as a public service event and anyone wishing to attend may do so. There will be no charge and seating is first come-first served.

Chamber of Commerce Office

The format for the Forum is still in the development stage; but, each candidate will be provided time at the beginning to introduce themselves and make a few opening remarks along with time at the end for closing comments. Since there are seven candidates running on the Republican ticket for the May primary, candidates' responses to questions will be required to be brief and will be timed.

May First Cumberland County Primary Races Set and 4 incumbents face no challengers

The Cumberland Count Primary election races are set as of the February 15 deadline there are 7 candidates qualified for the Republican Primary for the office of Cumberland County Mayor and no Democrats.

Candidates who have qualified for the May Republican Primary race for the County Mayor's office include Timothy A. Claflin, Allen Foster, J.C. Hancock, Randal Kidwell, Doug Scarlett, Ligue Wisdom and Danny Wyatt.

With the retirement of Court Clerk Larry Sherrill, Two candidates have qualified to be on the ballot for the Republican Primary race for Circuit Court Clerk, Jessica R. Burgess and Nick Neal. No Democratic candidate will appear on the ballot.

The remaining races have a single candidate and are essentially settled since none of the incumbents running for re-election face any opposition.

Incumbent Judy Graham Swallows has qualified for the Register of Deeds on the Democratic primary.

Incumbent Sheriff Casey Cox is the only candidate qualified for the Republican primary. And no candidate will appear on the Democratic ballot.

Incumbent Kim Tollett Wyatt has qualified for Trustee on the Republican Primary and incumbent Jule Bryson has qualified for County Clerk on the Republican Primary. No opposition from either Republicans or Democrats will appear on the ballot.

Short of something unforeseen at this time, Casey Cox will serve another term as Sheriff, Judy Graham Swallow will serve another term as Register of Deeds. Kim Tollett Wyatt will remain County Trustee and Jule Bryson will remain as County Clerk.

No races will pit a Republican against a Democrat. Candidates do have a week to withdraw from a race so their name won't appear on the ballot.
