August Races for County Commission and BOE Set as Deadline Passes for Candidates to Run

With the deadline now passed, the following candidates for Cumberland County Commission and odd-numbered districts of the Board of Education have qualified to have their name included on the ballot for the August 2nd county election.


Qualified candidates have until noon Thursday April 12 to withdraw their names in writing or they will appear on the ballot.

In the August 2nd Cumberland County election eighteen seats on the Cumberland County Commission and the odd number districts of the Board of Education are up for election.

Two commissioners from each district and one BOE member from the odd number districts 1,3,5,7 and 9 will be elected in the August balloting. Candidates who have qualified are marked.

In the Second, Fifth and Ninth district County Commission races only two candidates qualified meaning that they will get seats on the commission. Also, in the First and Fifth district BOE race only one candidate qualified so Jim Inman and Tony Brock will both get a seat on the BOE with no opposition.

Latest Update on August 2, 2018 County Races for Co. Commission and BOE


Updated as of 3-12-18 with less than 4 weeks to the deadline to qualify, here are the current candidates that have taken out papers to run for County Commission and BOE races.  

In the August Cumberland County election on August 2nd Elections will be held for all members of the Cumberland County Commission and the odd number districts of the Board of Education.


Two commissioners from each district and one BOE member from the odd number districts 1,3,5,7 and 9 will be elected in the August balloting. Most of these candidates listed below have taken out papers but not yet returned them. Candidates who have qualified are indicated. The deadline for qualification petitions to be turned in to the Election Commission office is April 5 at noon.

May Local Primary Ballot Finalized but still time to run for Co. Commission or BOE. Candidate list here.

With the deadline now officially passed, no candidates withdrew from the May 1st county primary elections. The final list of candidates is HERE.

In the August 2nd Cumberland County election for all members of the Cumberland County Commission and the odd number districts of the Board of Education the following list of candidates have taken out papers to run. Incumbents are indicated as well as those who have returned petitions and qualified for the ballot.

In the August Cumberland County election on August 2nd Elections will be held for all members of the Cumberland County Commission and the odd number districts of the Board of Education.

New Candidates for County Races plus County Commission and BOE Races Starting to take Shape.

Some new candidates have taken out papers to run for Cumberland County Mayor including one new Republican and an independent.



So far there are three candidates who have qualified for the May County Primary election including Timothy A. Claflin, Allen Foster and J.C. Hancock.

Other candidates have taken out papers and have until February 15 at noon to return them. In addition to previous candidates, one new potential candidate took out papers this week to run, Randall Kidwell. Kidwell is an environmental consultant and son of Tom Kidwell who served as Crossville City Manager, a County Commissioner and served on the board of the Catoosa Water Utility District. Other potential candidates previously reported include Doug Scarlett and Ligue Wisdom.

An Independent candidate for County Mayor has taken out papers, Sandra Lee (Sandy) Davis. If she qualifies she will be on the August Ballot as an independent but does not have to run on the May Primary.

Two candidates have qualified for the Republican Primary for Circuit Court Clerk, Jessica R. Burgess and Nick Neal had qualified as of January 25th.

Incumbent Judy Graham Swallows has qualified for the Register of Deeds on the Democratic primary.

Incumbent Sheriff Casey Cox has qualified for the Republican primary, Incumbent Kim Tollett Wyatt has qualified for Trustee on the Republican Primary and incumbent Jule Bryson has qualified for County Clerk on the Republican Primary.

There are now three Republican candidates for the office of County Road Superintending including incumbent Scott Blaylock, Stanley L. Hall and Kevin D. Music.
