Not giving students and teachers a week's relief from the flu, as other systems have, even after four local deaths and a school system death, in my mind shows that the Director of Schools does not have the compassion necessary to hold the position as I knew from day one. The system actually needs two Directors. One a bean counter, like they have now, and one who is concerned about the human beings in the Director's charge. I think teachers and parents should just develop a case of the "blue flu" and call in sick so that the drop in ADA money makes it necessary for the bean counters to cancel classes not for the right reason, because it needs to be done to protect life and limb, but for the wrong reason, because it is costing more money to be in school than it is to be out of school. If I were the family of the dead CCHS employee I would also be exploring the possibility of a wrongful death lawsuit against the school system and the county. Knowledge is power and now we all know and something should be done whenever this contract is up or before if possible. I think the Director should be fired. But then I'm used to dealing with professionals. I'm confident this will never happen in Cumberland County no matter how many people eventually die. Following the current course of action I am convinced will lead to more deaths, but then, apparently, who really cares? Certainly not the Director or her boss, the Cumberland County Board of Education. They need to step up and tell the Director what to do, as is their job!
