Candidates seeking spots on the May 1, 2018 County Primary Elections

With the May 1, 2018, Cumberland County primary election starting to take shape, numerous candidates have taken out petitions to have their name on the ballot and have until February 15 at noon to return them to qualify.

Elections for 2018 include the County Primary May 1, the County General August 2 and the State General and Municipal elections on November 6.

The most active race appears it will be the race for County Mayor with incumbent Kenny Carey not planning to run for reelection. Candidates who have taken out petitions to appear on the Republican primary ballot include:
  • Timothy A. Claflin
  • Allen Foster
  • James C. Hancock
  • Robert D. Scarlett and
  • Ligue Wisdom

J. C. Hancock

Both Claflin and Foster are current County Commissioners, Foster previously served on the Board of Education. Hancock is a Crossville Police Detective and Wisdom and Scarlett both ran for County Mayor four years ago.

Another open race without an incumbent is the race for Circuit Court Clerk since Larry Sherrill has announced he is not running for reelection. To candidates for the Republican Primary have taken out papers so far and include:
  • Jessica R. Burgess and
  • Nicholas E. Neal.

Julius Bryson, incumbent County Clerk has taken out papers for the Republican primary.

Judy G. Swallows, incumbent Register of Deeds has taken out and returned qualifying papers for the Democratic primary.

Incumbent Road Superintendent Scotty L. Blaylock and challenger Kevin D. Music have taken out papers to run for the Republican primary.  Both men ran against each other four years ago.  Blaylock is the incumbent road superintendent and Music is the street supervisor for the City of Crossville.
