Sandra L. Davis Offers Cumberland County Residents Another Option in Mayoral Race

Sandra Lee (Sandy) Davis

(Editor's note: This press release was provided by the Davis Campaign.)
Sandra Lee Davis, a highly qualified teacher and a successful businesswoman announces plans for the office of Cumberland County Mayor. She is an Independent candidate in the general election this August.

The candidate paralleled the county mayor's job with the call to serve issued by John F. Kennedy in 1961. Here is her paraphrased statement. “It is not what this county can do for me; it is what I can do for the county.” She continued, “I am NOT seeking this office for personal, political, or financial gain; instead my desire is to serve.”

“This means that I will represent all people including those citizens that feel forgotten.” Davis declared, “I am deeply touched and motivated by the needs of the people of Cumberland County. It is my desire to resolve these issues with my background and my leadership skills, and to address the concerns of the people with a bipartisan approach.”

Davis has a strong background in education. Receiving a world-class education for grades K-12, she graduated from Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 1971. At Tennessee Technological University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Music Education in 1975, and then she earned her Master of Arts as an Early Childhood Specialist in 1985.

“I was raised as a city girl, but was also taught the values of country living through my extended family and our summer visits to their family farms. These experiences guided me into understanding the vast differences in people and helped me to develop my two areas of specialty: education and agriculture,” the candidate noted.

Beginning in 1975, Davis worked for two years, first in Oak Ridge City Schools, and then in Roane County Schools. In 1977 she began her Cumberland County teaching career. At that time her salary was below the poverty level which led the candidate to develop a second career. Like her parents, Curtis and Maxey Barlow, she began her own family farm that has grown into a very successful business. Davis has learned to multi-task, prioritize, organize, and lead in both positions simultaneously.

Recently a young voter expressed, “I am for you, Mrs. Davis because you are an organizer, and that is what this county needs; someone who can organize and get things done.”

Davis is not a novice to county government. She has served as a school representative and as a concerned citizen in numerous county commission and school board meetings since 1985. Building budgets, spending responsibly, and developing plans to better organize and eliminate stressful situations are some of her attributes.

“Using a bipartisan approach in county government will ensure a more impartial system of government to coordinate and provide better services and information,” Davis explained. “I have worked my entire career using a bipartisan approach in the classroom. When we build more unity and unite for the common good of Cumberland County, then we will see more success.”

“A successful person is guided throughout his or her life by faith, family, and friends.” the candidate believes. Davis gained many valuable experiences as a working mom while she nurtured her children who have grown into two outstanding young men, James and Bryant Davis. Two cherished family events are the marriage of James and Jennifer, and her own forty year anniversary celebration in 2017. Her husband is Jim Davis, an Army Veteran who is highly decorated for his military service with the 82nd Airmobile Artillery in Vietnam (1969-1971).

“Faith is personal, family is dear, and friends are trustworthy. Cumberland County citizens have trusted me to teach their children for forty years, and now I am asking the people of the Cumberland County to trust me to manage their government.” the candidate concluded.
