Election Day has arrived. Polls in Cumberland County are open from 8 AM to 7 PM today Tuesday November 8. You must vote at the precinct you are assigned to to cast your ballot today.

Voters are required to bring a photo ID issued by the state or federal government however a university ID does not qualify. As long as the ID meets the requirements, it can be expired.

In addition to the presidential election, also on the ballot is selection of the 6th District US Congressional representative and the 25th district state representative. (Sample Ballots are below.)

Crossville city voters will chose 2 of 8 candidates for city council while Crab Orchard voters choose a mayor and Pleasant Hill voters choose members of the town council.

Voters are reminded that they cannot wear political items of clothing, pins or stickers at the polling place.

Record early vote turn out in Cumberland County and statewide. 2665 votes cast in Crossville election.

A record 1.6 million voters turned out to early vote in Tennessee's November 8 election.  Cumberland County also broke their record with 16,832 in person voters and a total ballots cast of 17,746 through November 3.

Local election officials say another 200 mail in ballots are out and could come in to be counted.

In the City of Crossville election, 2665 ballots were cast early out of 6342 registered city voters eligible to vote.  42 percent of city voters have already cast their ballots in the city council race.

County voters who have voted early totaled 44 percent of those eligible.

Voters who did not early vote can still cast a ballot on the official election day November 8 at their regular precinct location.  

There were frequently lines to early vote.

FINAL DAY TO EARLY VOTE! 8 AM to 5 PM today. Next chance to vote will be November 8 at your regular precinct.

After the end of early voting this afternoon, the last chance to cast a vote in the presidential election is November 8 at your regular voting precinct.  Voters in Cumberland County TN will also vote for state representative and US Representative.

Local municipal elections are also held in Crossville for two council seats, Crab Orchard and Pleasant Hill.

With lines for much of the early voting period so far and record turnouts, only a short time remains for any registered voters who want to early vote before the election day on November 8.

In addition to the US Presidential Race voters can pick their State Representative and US Congressional Representative.  Residents of Crossville, Crab Orchard and Pleasant Hill also have choices to make.  Sample ballots are below.

Early voting takes place at the Cumberland County Election Commission offices located in the Milo Lemert building across Main Street from the Courthouse and voting is each day from 8 AM to 5 PM. A photo ID is required to vote.

While the lines move pretty quickly voters have often lined up 

out the door while waiting.

Early voting lines much of the day as record turn out continues.

Cumberland County election coordinator Jill Davis says they are almost constantly busy and lines to early vote continue during much of the day as locals want to get their votes cast.

According to Davis, as of 10 AM on Wednesday October 26 almost 9000 ballots have been cast and that number includes some 662 absentee ballots.  City voters are also turning out with 1293 votes cast by voters inside the city limits meaning a big turn out will decide the city council race as well.

but a record number of votes continue to be cast. 

Man who said he was tired of election facing charges for damaging Courthouse lawn political signs.

While many people are tired of the election and the political signs put up everywhere, not many people go to the lengths a young man did in Crossville Tuesday morning.

Everyday for early voting, supporters and candidates put signs up on the courthouse lawn hoping to catch the eyes of early voters heading to the election commission office across the street to vote.  This morning a young man who told police he was tied of the election allegedly came through the courthouse lawn and kicked all the signs down that had been set up just before 8 AM.

The man taken into custody was identified as David Mackie and he was placed under $2500 bond.

One candidate who was putting up signs after the incident told this reporter that he had been eating breakfast at McDonalds that morning and had seen the young man kicking down signs along 127-N as well.  The young man was taken into custody by Crossville police and is expected to face vandalism related charges.

The Crossville/ Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce has been involved in the Crossville city council election race.  They invited each candidate to a private briefing about the chamber with volunteers and staff, sponsored the council candidate forum held at the Playhouse (link to videos) and sent a survey to all the candidates requesting answers to a series of questions, some in reference to future chamber funding by the city council.

Early voting now through November 3 at the Cumberland County Election Commission office

Early voting is now underway and registered voters can vote in person at the Election Commission office at the rear of the Milo Lemert building weekdays from 8 to 5 PM and Saturdays from 8 to noon.

Early voters were lined up out the front door October 19 

at about 11:40 AM for the first day of early voting.

Voters must bring a state issued photo ID in order to vote.  Sample ballots are shown below.

Tuesday October 11 is the final day to register to vote or to change your election information in time to vote in the November 8 election for the US Presidential race, 6th district congressional race, 25th district state house race, Crossville city council along with Pleasant Hill and Crab Orchard municipal elections.

The Cumberland County Election commission is located in the Milo Lemert courthouse annex across from the Main Cumberland County.  The office is open until 4 PM.

1) City council candidate list finalized

There is no change in the candidates for city council. Thursday at noon was the deadline for any candidate to drop out if they wanted to and no requests were made. All 8 of the candidates will appear on the November 8 ballot for Crossville city council and the two candidates who receive the most votes will gain a spot on the council.

2) New Candidates for Crossville city manager position

Three additional candidates have submitted letters and resumes for the Crossville city manager job currently being advertised.

New candidates include:

Terence Arrington of Greenville SC whose last job is county administrator for Darlignton Co. South Carolina. Arrignton served in that position from 1-2015 through 8-2016. Arrington has a Masters of Public Administration and is working toward and MBA. He has government experience since 2011 including deputy city administrator of Salisbury MD from 1-2014 to 1-2015.

Allen May of Urbanville IA last held the position of city administrator of Coal Valley Illinois. He started serving in that position in 2014. Prior to that position, May has zoning and planning experience back to 1974.

Bobby Goney of Crossville is a registered nurse that has worked in intensive care for the last several years, curently in Sparta and prior for Cumberland Medical Center. He holds an MBA in healthcare administration. In addition, Goney has previous experience in banking and accounting.

3) J. R. Blankenship Court appearance Monday on appeals

The appeal of two matters concerning J. R. Blankenship are scheduled to be before circuit court Judge Jonathan Young. Blankenship is represented by Nashville Attorney Joseph Johnston. The matter of the $1500 fine placed against Blankenship over “unsigned fliers” is under appeal along with an appeal of the issuance of a restraining order to city judge Ivy Gardener.

With 8 candidates vying  for 2 Crossville city council seats the race has already started. 

Election day is November 8.  One candidate has already started putting out signs.  With non of the current incumbents seeking reelection the race appears to be wide open.

The future direction of the city of Crossville will be in the hands of voters.

Eight candidates meet deadline for city council run. Neither incumbent seeking reelection.

The deadline has passed for candidates to turn in nominating petitions to get their name on the ballot for the November 8 city election for two seats on the Crossville city council.

Candidates qualifying include:

4) Robert E. "Rob" Harrison,
5) Terri L. Manning

Neither of the council members who currently hold the seats are running, Councilman Pete Souza previously announced he would not be running and while councilman Jesse Kerley took out papers he did not turn them back in.

While most of the candidates have not held office previously, candidates J. H. Graham has served as both a council member and many years as mayor.  He lost an election 2 years ago to current mayor James Mayberry.  David Warner previously held a council seat from 1985 to 1992.  

The candidates have a week to decide if they want to stay on the ballot and can withdraw by noon August 26 if they choose.  Otherwise their name will appear on the ballot for November 8.

October 11 is the deadline to register to vote in the November election according to the Cumberland County election office.

Early voting opens on October 19 and continues through November 3.

Two additional names have qualified to appear on the November 8 ballot for the two expiring city council seats.

The newly qualified candidates are Jerry T. "J.J." Brownstead and Charles Cooper Jr. This brings the number of candidates vying for 2 council seats to a total of 8.

Previously qualified candidates included:

1) J. H. Graham, former mayor and councilman
2) Robert E. "Rob" Harrison, 
3) Terri L. Manning
4) Jeanette W. Parsons
5) Scot Shanks
6) David E. Warner, former city councilman who served from Jan 1985-Dec 1992

In addition, several candidates have taken out qualifying papers but have not yet turned them back in. The deadline to return the petitions with at least 25 registered city voters signatures is August 18 at noon. 

1) Barry Field (Field actually lives outside of the city limits and appears to be ineligible to run.) 
2) Jesse Kerley, currently holding one of the council seats up for election
3) Jack E. Miller, former Crossville city manager
4) Ronnie D. Wyatt, owner of Wyatt Construction

Candidates who qualify do have a week after the August 18 deadline to remove thier name from consideration if they choose to do so.

EXCLUSIVE: Crossville city councilman Pete Souza announces he will not seek reelection

In an exclusive interview with Crossville city councilman Pete Souza, he said he would not be seeking reelection to the council in the upcoming November 8 election.

Souza added that his decision has nothing to do with the matter of his assault allegations against councilman Jesse Kerley, but said, “I wanted to see if we were going to have good candidates to come out that that would take care of the city and city employees. If there was not going to be good candidates, that pulled papers, I would have ran. But I feel that we have good candidates for the people to choose from.”

Souza continued, “At that time I decided that it as best for the city to move on and let them get the house back in order. “I'm not going to mention any names, but when I saw three good names out there, I felt comfortable that things will work itself out.”

“I said to the public that they would get 4 years of my life and they got four years, but I didn't want to announce way early. It's my deepest desire that come November election that we get two new people in there with the insight to work with the city mayor and get this city hall straightened out,” Souza concluded.

Jerry T. Brownstead has taken out a petition to qualify for having his name put on the November ballot for a seat on the Crossville city coincil.

Brownstead is the 9th to take out papers for the 2 available seats on the council.   The two seats are currently held by Pete Souza and Jesse Kerley. 

Brownstead is an entertainer who also goes by Jerry J. Thomas.  As of July 15 he had not returned the petition with the necessary signatures but the deadline is still over a month away.
