ADDITIONAL OFFICERS ARE AT CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

CROSSVILLE, TN.- The Crossville Police Department, working with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Cumberland County Schools, have increased the presence of officers at Cumberland County schools due to social media posts referencing student walk-outs or possible threats of violence.

Unsubstantiated reports have been received, popping up on various social media platforms, throughout the morning. The posts have mentioned a planned student walk-out memorializing the Parkland Florida students. Indications are that the planned walk-outs have been cancelled. Some of the posts have indicated unverified threats of violence.

In an effort to be proactive and to err on the side of caution, Law Enforcement Officers plan to be especially careful rather than taking a risk of missing any violent activity. Additional officers will be stationed at, as well as be traveling between the schools throughout the day, until any possibility of threat has passed.

Again, no credible evidence of imminent danger has been found, but authorities are investigating the social media posts and their sources, for possible prosecution.

Any further information will be released as it is needed.

Morgan County Man Indicted in Fentress County Murder, Arson

KNOXVILLE –An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has led to the indictment of a Morgan County man on murder and arson charges.

Jonathan D. Smith

In December 2017, at the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI Special Agents joined Tennessee Fire Investigative Services and the Fentress County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a residential fire that occurred on Maynard Drive in Grimsley on December 2nd. The body of Melissa L. Durham was found inside the home. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that led them to Johnathan Donavan Smith (11-23-70) as the individual responsible for Durham’s death. The investigation further revealed that Smith intentionally started the fire at the residence.

National Weather Service Issues FLOOD WATCH Over Concerns about Flooding from Another Rain Event

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING...

The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a
  • Flood Watch for a portion of Middle Tennessee, including the following areas, Bedford, Cannon, Cheatham, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, Davidson, De Kalb, Dickson, Fentress, Giles, Grundy, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, Lawrence, Lewis, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Van Buren, Warren, Wayne, White, Williamson, and Wilson.
  • From Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning
  • 2 to 4 inches of rain.
  • Runoff from this event will likely cause rises of smaller creeks and streams, especially Wednesday evening when thunderstorms may produce flash flooding. Minor flooding may also be possible on the larger rivers into the weekend, especially on the lower reaches of the Cumberland, Duck, and Tennessee River basins.
NWS says expect flooding from creeks and
Streams. (file photo)

HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK:
Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Much of the Mid-South From Early Wednesday Through Thursday Afternoon.

Rainfall is expected to return to Middle Tennessee early Wednesday, falling on saturated grounds unable to absorb much more. Area creeks, streams, and rivers are running high and a number of river gauge locations are above Action Stage. Rain is expected to move out Thursday afternoon, leaving total rainfall amounts of several inches across the area.

Runoff from this event will likely cause rises of smaller creeks and streams, especially Wednesday evening when intense thunderstorms may produce flash flooding. Minor flooding may also be possible on the larger rivers into the weekend, especially on the lower reaches of the Cumberland, Duck, and Tennessee River basins.

Model guidance indicates storm total rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches can be expected, with isolated higher amounts possible. Where the rain falls vary from Southern Kentucky and most of Tennessee to Northern Mississippi and Northern Alabama. This lack of consistency with where the rain will fall creates uncertainty with total rainfall amounts, as well as the severity of flooding.

Farm Services Admin Photographer Ben Shahn captured the people of Crossville and how he did it.

Another famous Farm Service Adminstration program photographer that photographed Crossville was Luithianan born Ben Shahn.  Shahn was a photographer as well as a painter and designer.  He developed a style he referred to as "social realism."

Shahn exploited the portability of the 35mm camera to capture his subjects in an informal and spontaneous manner; he used a Leica with a right-angle viewfinder that enabled him to photograph subjects without their knowledge.

Shahn was the photographer that captured the people of Crossville at the time and in most of the images you can see the 35mm sprocket holes.  If a right angle viewfinder was used it would explain the lack of self consciousness of the subjects in the photo as they may not have realsized they were the subject of the photo.

Cumberland Homestead photos by Carl Mydans in 1936 who later covered WWII for Life Magazine

These photos are credited to Carl Maydans from 1936.  Maydans was a photographer who worked for the Farm Services Administration and later for Life Magazine.  In fact, not long after these photos were taken, Mydans became one of the first staff photographers for Life.  As a war photographer, he was captured by the Japanese in the Phillippines and was later released in a prisoner exchange.  He covered the war in Europe then returned to the Phillippines to capture the moment when Gen. MacAurther "returned."  He also shot photos of the surrender of Japan on the USS Missouri.
